12 Kitchen Chimney and Hob Design ideas

Black Glass Angled Chimney
An angled black glass chimney with a built-in glass hob is the most common modern Indian setup. The slanted front gives more headroom. Wipe the glass daily after cooking.

Steel Pyramid Hood Classic
A stainless steel pyramid hood suits traditional kitchens and heavy Indian cooking. Easy to clean and very durable. Choose baffle filters for oily tadka and deep frying.

Island Chimney Over Cooking Island
An island chimney hangs from the ceiling over a hob set into an island. Looks dramatic in open kitchens. Kaff lists island and premium chimneys at higher prices.

Hidden Built In Chimney
A built-in chimney sits inside a wall cabinet, with only a slim strip showing. Clean look for minimal kitchens. Leave an access door for filter cleaning.

Ceiling Cassette Chimney
A ceiling cassette hood sits flush in the false ceiling. Very sleek but costly; Kaff lists ceiling cassette models from about ₹75,000 (2026). Needs a good ceiling plan.

Copper Finish Statement Hood
A copper or brass-tone hood becomes the focal point of a classic kitchen. Pair it with green or navy cabinets. Polish metal finishes often, since cooking fumes dull them quickly.

Small Kitchen 60 Cm Slim Chimney
A slim 60 cm chimney over a two-burner hob fits a small kitchen. Kaff says the chimney should be at least as wide as the hob. Choose auto-clean if you fry often.

Vertical Flat Panel Chimney
A vertical flat-panel chimney gives a clean, modern face and good headroom. Check the stated mounting height for your model in its manual before the electrician fixes the socket.

Chimney In Tiled Brick Niche
A tiled niche or masonry hood around the chimney blends it into the wall. Popular in farmhouse kitchens and older bungalows. Leave access to the duct and filters for cleaning.

Corner Chimney In L Kitchen
Placing the hob near the corner of an L lets the chimney duct exit through the nearest outer wall. Keep the duct short; Faber India says no longer than 12 ft.

White Glass Chimney Bright Kitchen
A white glass chimney disappears against white tiles and cabinets. Smart for small, bright kitchens with light tiles. White shows oil stains quickly, so clean it regularly.

Kitchen Without Chimney Exhaust
Some families use only an exhaust fan and a window. Cheaper, but smoke and oil spread more. Fit a good exhaust fan high on an outer wall near the stove.
Illustrative design concepts. Sizes, finishes and prices vary by maker and city, so confirm details with your designer or carpenter.
Indian cooking produces a lot of smoke and oil, from tadka to deep frying. A well-placed chimney keeps walls, ceilings and cabinets cleaner and the air easier to breathe. The two decisions that matter most are the height above the hob and the size and suction of the chimney.
Below are 12 kitchen chimney and hob designs, then maker guidance on height, sizing, ducting, prices and LPG safety from official sources.
How high should the chimney be above the hob?
Makers differ slightly, so always check your model's manual. Here is what they say:
| Source | Gas hob | Electric or induction |
|---|---|---|
| Faber (Italy) | at least 75 cm | at least 65 cm |
| Faber India | 26 to 32 in | not stated |
| Kaff India | 24 to 30 in (60 to 75 cm) standard; minimum 65 cm | not stated |
| Whirlpool UK | 65 cm (under 7,500 W); 75 cm (over 7,500 W) | 65 cm |
Faber India warns that under 26 in risks oil in the collectors igniting, and over 36 in the chimney may not clear the smoke. Faber India's 26 to 32 in works out to about 66 to 81 cm, so it sits above Kaff's 65 cm minimum; your model's manual has the final say.
Choosing chimney size and suction
- Width: Kaff says the chimney should be at least as wide as the hob. Design Cafe lists standard hob and chimney widths of 60, 75 and 90 cm.
- Suction: Kaff's rule is kitchen volume in m³ multiplied by 10 for normal cooking, or by 15 for heavy cooking. Measure length x width x height in metres.
- Long duct: add 200 to 300 m³/hr if the duct is over 12 ft, Kaff advises.
- Filters: baffle filters handle heavy oil well; auto-clean models collect oil in a tray.
For example, a kitchen 3 m long, 2.5 m wide and 2.75 m high has about 20.6 m³ of volume, so Kaff's rule gives roughly 206 m³/hr for normal cooking or 309 m³/hr for heavy cooking.
Ducting tips
- Keep the duct short and with few bends. Faber India says no longer than 12 ft.
- A generic hood manual gives a minimum duct diameter of 120 mm, with 150 mm allowed.
- Plan the hole in the outer wall before tiling and before the false ceiling is built.
- Avoid flexible ducts that sag; smoother ducts move air better.
If your hob is on an inner wall, the duct may need to cross the ceiling. Our kitchen POP ceiling page explains how to hide it.
Chimney and hob prices in 2026
Kaff's 2026 price guide (a maker's figures) lists entry 60 cm wall-mount chimneys of 800 to 1,000 m³/hr at ₹6,000 to 10,000; value auto-clean 60 or 90 cm models at ₹11,000 to 18,000; mid-range 90 cm at ₹18,000 to 30,000; premium or island models at ₹30,000 to 45,000; ceiling cassettes from ₹75,000. Auto-clean adds about ₹3,000 to 5,000.
For hobs, Beyond Appliances (Jan 2026) lists entry 2 to 3 burner hobs at ₹3,000 to 8,000, mid-range 3 to 4 burner auto-ignition at ₹8,000 to 20,000 and premium at ₹20,000 to 35,000. Kaff notes premium hobs often have 8 mm glass and a flame failure device as standard. Prices change; check current listings.
LPG and fire safety
The official PMUY consumer guidance booklet from the oil companies sets out the basics:
- Keep the cylinder upright, and the stove on a platform above cylinder level.
- Never keep the cylinder in a pit or inside an enclosed compartment.
- No shelves or storage cabinets above the hot plate.
- Use an ISI-marked hotplate and a Suraksha hose; the booklet gives the hose a life of 5 years. Keep it visible and replace it if cracked.
- Turn the regulator off after use and every night.
- Get the LPG installation checked every two years.
If you smell gas, close the burners and regulator, put out flames, do not touch electrical switches, open doors and windows, and call the emergency helpline 1906 (IndianOil). Keep chimney filters clean, since built-up grease is a fire risk. For cabinet planning around the hob, see kitchen cabinet design.
Placement and design ideas
Place the hob on an outer wall if you can, for a short duct. Leave landing space either side: NKBA suggests 12 in on one side and 15 in on the other. Match the chimney finish to the kitchen: black glass for modern, steel for classic, white for small bright kitchens. For more layouts, see modular kitchen design, L-shaped kitchens and kitchen island design. Vastu followers often place the stove in the southeast; that is traditional belief, and safety rules come first. See vastu kitchen design.
Frequently asked questions
What is the right chimney height above a gas stove?
Faber India suggests 26 to 32 in between hob and chimney, and warns that under 26 in risks oil in the collectors igniting. Faber Italy says at least 75 cm above gas hobs, and Kaff gives 24 to 30 in with a 65 cm minimum. Always follow your model's manual.
Kitchen chimney kitne size ki leni chahiye?
Choose a chimney at least as wide as your hob, Kaff advises. Design Cafe lists common hob and chimney widths of 60, 75 and 90 cm. Measure your hob's width first and pick the chimney size that matches or exceeds it.
How much suction power do I need?
Kaff's rule: multiply your kitchen volume in cubic metres by 10 for normal cooking or 15 for heavy cooking. If the duct is longer than 12 ft, add 200 to 300 m³/hr. Heavy frying and tadka every day need the higher figure.
Is an auto-clean chimney worth it?
It suits homes that fry often, because oil collects in a tray instead of clogging filters. Kaff says auto-clean adds about ₹3,000 to 5,000 to the price (2026). You still need to empty the oil tray and wipe the outside regularly.
Can I have a modular kitchen without a chimney?
Yes, with a good exhaust fan and window, and many older homes do. But smoke and oil spread more, so walls and cabinets get greasy faster. If you skip the chimney, never put cabinets right above the stove; the PMUY booklet says no storage above the hot plate.
How long should a chimney duct be?
Faber India says the duct should be no longer than 12 ft. Keep it as straight as possible with few bends. A generic hood manual gives a minimum duct diameter of 120 mm. Plan the outlet hole before tiling and false ceiling work.
