16 Kitchen Platform and Slab Design ideas

Illustrative design concepts. Sizes, finishes and prices vary by maker and city, so confirm details with your designer or carpenter.

A good kitchen platform design starts with height and depth, then material and edge. In India the platform (or slab) takes heavy steel vessels, hot kadais straight off the flame, turmeric, lemon and constant water near the sink. A platform that looks great in a showroom can stain, chip or hurt your back.

This guide gives sourced dimensions, compares platform materials and explains edge profiles. For a full stone-by-stone look, see our kitchen granite designs.

Kitchen platform height: what sources say

There is no BIS or NBC figure for domestic counter height, so designers use industry guidance:

SourceHeight
Studio Matrx850 to 900 mm; 850 for average Indian height, 900 for taller users
Design Cafe34 to 36 in; about 3 ft for short users
Asian Paints Beautiful Homes34 to 36 in, 36 in most common
HomeLane32 to 35 in, about 34 in desirable
Housing.com (portal, undated)820 to 860 mm

BORA, a German hob maker, gives a simple test: the worktop should sit about 10 to 15 cm below the underside of your elbow with the forearm bent at 90 degrees. Measure the person who cooks most.

Depth, overhang and backsplash

  • Depth: Design Cafe gives countertop depth of about 24 in (60 cm) with a front overhang of 1 to 1.5 in. Studio Matrx gives 600 mm with a 20 to 40 mm overhang over a 560 to 580 mm carcass.
  • Plinth: Studio Matrx lists 100 to 150 mm, recessed 50 to 75 mm so your toes fit under.
  • Gap to wall units: Design Cafe gives 18 to 21 in; Studio Matrx gives 450 to 600 mm.

A small overhang keeps drips off the shutters. Run the backsplash tile or slab at least up to the wall cabinets so oil does not reach painted wall.

Platform materials compared

Prices below are NoBroker's June 2026 figures for material only; fabrication and installation add Rs 150 to 400 per sq ft.

  • Granite: natural stone, excellent heat resistance, porous so seal every 1 to 2 years. Indian granite Rs 150 to 500 per sq ft.
  • Quartz: engineered, about 90 to 95% crushed quartz, non-porous, no sealing, moderate heat resistance. Standard quartz Rs 250 to 1,200 per sq ft. Caesarstone advises a trivet for pans above about 150 degrees C.
  • Solid surface: DuPont says Corian matte scratches can be sanded out, but it is not heat-proof.
  • Stainless steel: Design Cafe calls it highly durable, heat and stain resistant.
  • Marble: needs regular maintenance to prevent staining and etching, per Design Cafe.

Design Cafe (2026) lists granite at Rs 160 to 350 and quartz at Rs 280 to 450 per sq ft including installation; ranges vary by source and city.

Edge profiles

  1. Flat or eased: square with slightly softened corners; cleanest look, easy to wipe, cheapest.
  2. Half bullnose: rounded top edge; kinder on hips and kids.
  3. Full bullnose: rounded top and bottom; drips can run underneath.
  4. Ogee: S-shaped classic curve; traps grease.
  5. Mitred: a strip glued below to make a thin slab look thick; premium look.

For daily cooking, an eased or half bullnose edge is the most practical choice.

Platform side design and corners

The exposed end of a platform needs a finished side. Options include a stone side panel, a laminate end panel matching cabinets, or a rounded open end shelf. Round the outer corner in homes with children. At L corners, ask the fabricator to place joints away from the sink and hob so water and heat do not open them.

Caring for your platform

MSI Surfaces advises wiping granite spills daily, washing weekly with dish soap and warm water, and avoiding lemon, vinegar, bleach and ammonia. If water stops beading, reseal. Caesarstone advises mild detergent for quartz and no abrasive pads. Use a chopping board on every surface. For layout ideas, see L-shape kitchens, kitchen sink designs and modular kitchen design.

Frequently asked questions

Kitchen platform ki height kitni honi chahiye?

Studio Matrx gives 850 to 900 mm finished height, with 850 mm for average Indian height. Design Cafe and Asian Paints give 34 to 36 in, and Design Cafe suggests about 3 ft for short users. BORA suggests 10 to 15 cm below your bent elbow, so measure the main cook.

Which is better for a kitchen platform, granite or quartz?

Granite has excellent heat resistance and is cheaper, but it is porous and needs sealing every 1 to 2 years. Quartz is non-porous and needs no sealing, but resin can discolour with direct heat, so use a trivet. Heavy-cooking Indian kitchens often choose granite.

What is the standard depth of a kitchen slab?

Design Cafe gives about 24 in (60 cm) with a 1 to 1.5 in front overhang. Studio Matrx gives 600 mm over a 560 to 580 mm base carcass. Asian Paints Beautiful Homes gives 24 to 26 in. Deeper slabs give more space but make the back harder to reach.

What is the cost of a granite kitchen platform?

NoBroker (June 2026) lists Indian granite at Rs 150 to 500 per sq ft for material only, with fabrication and installation adding Rs 150 to 400. Design Cafe (2026) gives Rs 160 to 350. Prices vary by stone and city.

Which edge is best for a kitchen platform?

An eased flat edge or half bullnose is easiest to clean and kind to hips. Ogee edges look classic but collect grease. Full bullnose lets drips run underneath. Mitred edges look premium but cost more due to extra fabrication.

Can I make a kitchen platform with two heights?

Yes. A lower section for rolling rotis or using a mixer and a standard section for chopping and washing suits households with daily chapati making. It needs careful planning of cabinets underneath, so decide before ordering the modular units.
