14 Low Budget Kitchen Design ideas

Laminate Straight Kitchen Under Budget
A straight run in plain white laminate with a black granite top is the cheapest full modular setup. Suits a first home or a rented flat you own. Spend the saving on soft-close hinges.

Masonry Platform With Curtain Shelves
Keep the existing cement platform and add simple shelves below with fabric curtains. Very low cost, easy to clean, and common in older Indian homes. Choose washable cotton curtains.

Shutters Only Refresh In Mustard
If the carcass is sound, replace only the shutters and handles. Mustard laminate makes an old kitchen look new for a fraction of a full remake. Check the hinges before ordering.

Open Base With Steel Baskets
Skip shutters on the base units and use stainless steel baskets on runners. Cheaper than full shutters and air flows freely in humid cities. Clean baskets weekly.

Grey And Lime Two Tone
Two cheap laminate colours used smartly look custom. Grey lowers and lime green uppers suit a cheerful family kitchen. Keep the bolder colour on the smaller area.

Ready Made Rack Kitchen For Renters
Freestanding steel racks and a ready made sink stand need no carpentry and move with you. Perfect for tenants. Anchor tall racks to the wall for safety.

Wall Units Only Over Old Counter
Add a row of wall units over an existing granite platform and leave the base as it is for now. A sensible first phase. Plan the chimney position before fixing them.

PVC Board Kitchen For Wet Zones
PVC or WPC boards resist water around the sink at low cost. They look plain but survive leaks. Use them under the sink and keep ply elsewhere.

Warm Wood Grain Laminate Parallel
Wood-grain laminate gives the look of timber at laminate prices. A parallel kitchen in walnut-look laminate feels warm and hides marks. Pair with a light counter.

Painted Tile Upgrade Without Breaking
Tile paint or a peel-and-stick backsplash refreshes dated tiles without demolition. Good for renters and quick makeovers. Avoid stickers right behind the burner, where heat can lift them.

Corner Shelf Kitchen With Loft
A small loft and corner open shelves add storage cheaply in a tiny L. Build the loft in masonry if your builder is on site; it saves carpentry cost.

Monochrome White Budget Modern
An all-white laminate kitchen with simple profile handles looks modern and costs less than acrylic. Matte white is easier to maintain than gloss. Add one colourful accessory.

Steel Utensil Wall With Plank Shelves
A row of pine planks on steel brackets displays steel and brass vessels proudly. Cheap and very Indian. Keep heavy items on the lower plank.

Phase One Basic Parallel
Build just the hob side first with drawers and a chimney; add the sink side later. Phasing spreads the cost over time. Lay plumbing for both sides on day one.

A low budget kitchen is not about buying the cheapest board in the market. It is about spending on the parts that wear out (hinges, the sink unit, the counter) and saving on parts that are only about looks. Middle-class Indian families can get a working, good-looking kitchen in the basic price band if they plan carefully.
Below you will find 14 budget-friendly designs, then sourced price ranges, a save-or-spend table and a phased upgrade plan.
What a budget kitchen costs in 2026
Published ranges vary, so look at several. All are industry figures from 2025 to 2026, not our quotes:
- Design Cafe, Delhi (May 2026): basic ₹1.5 to 2.5 lakh; small kitchens ₹1.3 to 2.5 lakh. Countertop charged separately; civil, plumbing and electrical changes may add 10 to 20% if excluded.
- Brick & Bolt (updated Aug 2026): basic ₹1.3 to 2.5 lakh, citing Livspace's minimum of about ₹1.3 lakh for an average 1BHK kitchen.
- Livehomes, Chennai (Sep 2026): a straight kitchen ₹1.2 to 2.5 lakh; basic laminate ₹9,000 to 14,000 per running foot of cabinetry.
- HomeLane (Feb 2026): an 8 x 10 ft L-shaped kitchen from about ₹1.5 lakh, inclusions not listed.
Always check what is included: GST, countertop, sink, hob, chimney and installation are often extra. Brick & Bolt notes that sink, faucet, chimney and hob alone are typically 10 to 20% of a mid-size budget. Prices change, so ask for an itemised quote.
Where to save and where not to
| Item | Save or spend | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sink cabinet carcass | Spend | Greenply recommends BWP plywood under the sink; water damage is the first failure |
| Other carcasses | Save a little | HDHMR is moisture-resistant and cheaper than ply for dry zones |
| Shutter finish | Save | Laminate costs far less than acrylic or PU |
| Hinges and drawer channels | Spend | Cheap hardware sags and is hard to replace |
| Countertop | Save | Indian granite is durable and among the cheapest options |
| Sink | Spend a little | SS 304 resists rust better than SS 202, Ruhe notes |
| Accessories | Save | Add tandem drawers and pull-outs later |
Material choices that cut cost safely
CenturyPly (June 2026) lists 18 mm HDHMR at ₹90 to 130 per sq ft against plywood at ₹125 to 190. HDHMR is moisture-resistant, not waterproof, so keep BWP ply for the sink base. Standard MDF swells in humidity, Greenply warns, so avoid it in a kitchen.
For shutters, Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (July 2026) gives laminate finish costs of ₹400 to 900 per sq ft, against ₹700 to 1,400 for acrylic and ₹1,200 to 2,500 for PU. Matte laminate is scratch-resistant and easy on a daily-use kitchen.
For the top, NoBroker (June 2026) lists entry Indian granite at ₹150 to 200 per sq ft, material only, with fabrication adding ₹150 to 400. See more in our kitchen granite design gallery.
Pick the cheapest layout that works
HomeLane ranks layouts by cost from lowest to highest: straight, L, parallel, U, island. Fewer corners mean fewer corner fittings and less countertop cutting. If your room allows a straight run, it is the budget winner. Read our simple kitchen design ideas for clean straight layouts and small kitchen design for tight rooms.
A phased upgrade plan
If the full budget is not available now, build in stages so nothing has to be broken later:
- Phase 1: plumbing, electrical points, chimney duct hole, counter and sink unit. These are hard to change later.
- Phase 2: base units with shutters and one set of drawers near the hob.
- Phase 3: wall units and a loft.
- Phase 4: accessories, tall unit and lighting upgrades.

Small spends that look expensive
- Matching handles across all units.
- LED strip under wall units.
- A single feature wall of tiles behind the hob instead of the whole kitchen.
- Good quality tap; it is touched more than anything else.
- Neat storage jars in one colour.

Frequently asked questions
Low budget mein modular kitchen kaise banaye?
Choose a straight or L layout, laminate shutters on HDHMR or ply, and Indian granite on top. Use BWP ply under the sink and good hinges everywhere. Skip accessories at first and add them later. Industry guides list basic kitchens from about ₹1.3 lakh in 2025 to 2026; get itemised quotes.
What is the cheapest kitchen countertop in India?
Indian granite is usually the budget pick. NoBroker (June 2026) lists entry granite at ₹150 to 200 per sq ft for material, with fabrication and installation adding ₹150 to 400. It is heat-resistant and durable, though it needs resealing every year or two as it is porous.
Is HDHMR good for a budget kitchen?
Yes for dry areas and shutters. CenturyPly calls it moisture-resistant, not waterproof, and suggests BWP plywood for the carcass under the sink. Its 18 mm price of ₹90 to 130 per sq ft (June 2026) is lower than plywood, so mixing the two is a common money-saving approach.
Which is cheaper, laminate or acrylic shutters?
Laminate. Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (July 2026) lists laminate finish at ₹400 to 900 per sq ft and acrylic at ₹700 to 1,400. Matte laminate also hides scratches and fingerprints better, which suits a busy family kitchen. Acrylic gives a mirror gloss but needs gentle cleaning.
Can I make a kitchen without a carpenter at all?
Yes, for a rented home. Freestanding steel racks, a ready made sink stand and open plank shelves on brackets need only basic fixing. It will not look like a fitted kitchen, but you can take everything with you. Anchor tall racks to the wall so they do not tip.
Is a cheap 202 steel sink okay?
It works but rusts more easily. Ruhe, a sink maker, says SS 304 has about 18% chromium and 8% nickel and resists corrosion better, while 202 has less nickel and does poorly in coastal areas. The sink is a small share of the budget, so 304 is worth it.
